• Prerequisite 1: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention

  About: To reduce pollution from construction activities by controlling soil erosion, waterway sedimentation and airborne dust generation.

  Tips: Work with companies like Little Tikes Commercial to create an erosion and sedimentation control plan during the design phase of the project. Consider employing strategies such as temporary and permanent seeding, mulching, earthen dikes, silt fencing, sediment traps and sediment basins. Look for a manufacturer who uses recyclable materials, and whose installers are trained to recycle construction materials.

• Credit 4.2: Alternative Transportation, Bicycle Use

  Points: 1

  About: To reduce pollution and land development impacts from automobile use.

  Tips: Provide secure bicycle racks and/or storage like the “M” Bicycle Rack by Little Tikes Commercial to promote alternative modes of transportation.

• Credit 9: Site Master Plan

  Points: 1

  About: To ensure that the environmental site issues included in the initial development of the site and project are continued throughout future development.

  Tips: Work with Little Tikes Commerical to develop site layouts with the playgrounds integrated into site master planning efforts to accommodate future needs while adhering to and maintaining current environmental site conditions and plans for future expansion. The site layout should include parking, paving and surface covering under the playgrounds.

• Prerequisite 1: Storage and Collection of Recyclables

  About: To facilitate the reduction of waste generated by building occupants that is hauled to and disposed of in landfills.

  Tips: Provide an easily-accessible dedicated area or for the collection and storage of materials for recycling. Little Tikes Commercial Mountaineer receptacles are made from redwood and 100% recyclable aluminum waste cans, providing users with the opportunity to use marked waste receptacles for recyclable materials and reducing waste generated for landfills.

• Credit 2.1: Construction Waste Management, Divert 50% from Disposal

  Points: 1

  About: To divert construction and demolition debris from disposal in landfills and incineration facilities. Redirect recyclable recovered resources back to the manufacturing process and reusable materials to appropriate sites.

  Tips: Look for an installation team that is fully trained to recycle all packing materials and crates per each city’s regulations, which eliminate the use of landfill sand incinerators for disposal of construction materials. Consider manufacturers who use cardboard, wood, polyethylene and polypropylene branding and PVC film, all of which are recyclable in many markets.

• Credit 2.2: Construction Waste Management, Divert 75% from Disposal

  Points: 1

  About: To divert construction and demolition debris from disposal in landfills and incineration facilities. Redirect recyclable recovered resources back to the manufacturing process and reusable materials to appropriate sites.

Seek out manufacturers offering recycled materials. Little Tikes Commercial Black Kid Timers are made of 100 percent recycled materials. Kid Tiles are pre-fabricated polyurethane resin-bound 100% post consumer recycled rubber.

• Credit 3.2: Materials Reuse, 10%

  Points: 1

  About: To reuse building materials and products to reduce demand for virgin materials and reduce waste, thereby lessening impacts associated with the extraction and processing of virgin resources.

  Tips: Use salvaged, refurbished or reused materials, the sum of which constitutes at least 10%, based on cost, of the total value of materials on the project.   About: To increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials.

  Tips: Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of postconsumer recycled content plus 1/2 of the preconsumer content constitutes at least 10%, based on cost, of the total value of the materials in the project. Establish a project goal for recycled content materials and identify material suppliers that can achieve this goal.

• Credit 4.2: Recyled Content, 20% (post-consumer + 1/2 pre-consumer)

  Points: 1

  About: To increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials.

  Tips: Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of postconsumer recycled content plus 1/2 of the preconsumer content constitutes at least 20%, based on cost, of the total value of the materials in the project. Establish a project goal for recycled content materials and identify material suppliers that can achieve this goal.

• Credit 5.1: Regional Materials, 10% Extracted, Processed & Manufactured

  Points: 1

  About: To increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.

  Tips: Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10%, based on cost, of the total materials value. Establish a project goal for locally sourced materials, and identify materials and material suppliers that can achieve this goal.

• Credit 5.2: Regional Materials, 20% Extracted, Processed & Manufactured

  Points: 1

  Points: 1

  About: To integrate the sustainable features of a school facility with the school’s educational mission.

  Tips: Design a curriculum based on high-performance features of the playground and the relationship between human ecology, natural ecology and the playground. Curriculum must meet local/state standards and provide 10 or more hours of classroom instruction per year, per full-time student.
